How Usecases Make AI Systems Finite and Verifiable
How Usecases Make AI Systems Finite and Verifiable
Published: Applied Philosophy III - Usecases: From Theory to Implementation - Part I
Today I am publishing the Final Review Manuscript of Applied Philosophy III – Usecases: From Theory to Implementation – Part I, the third volume in The Systems Engineering Integrity Series.
This volume addresses a fundamental engineering question:
How can complex, AI-enabled systems be designed, validated, and governed without expanding their scope beyond what can be understood, verified, and ethically controlled?
My central argument is that complexity does not eliminate engineering responsibility. The conditions encountered in the real world may appear continuous and unbounded, but every engineered system must operate within finite boundaries. Those boundaries are established through engineering intent and expressed through structured Usecases, targeted data, bounded logic, defined Operational Envelopes, and reproducible validation.
From Perception to Authority
AI does not require the abandonment of Systems Engineering principles.
Within a properly constructed system, AI serves as a perception and execution-support mechanism. It does not become an autonomous source of behavior or authority. The governing structure remains intent, decomposition, verification, and proof.
The book develops this position through several connected ideas:
- Usecases as bounded and verifiable units of engineering truth
- Data as a deliberate design artifact
- The Working Model as an executable representation of engineering intent
- Operational Envelope validity as a prerequisite for trusted outputs
- The Usecase Library as the boundary of permitted behavior
- Verification, validation, and reproducibility at the Usecase level
- Failure-without-behavior as an explicit safety principle
The Occupant Sensing System provides the principal example. It exposes the ambiguity, combinatorial growth, real-world variation, and ethical consequences faced by modern sensing systems. The resulting method applies beyond occupant sensing to active safety, passive safety, autonomy, software-defined vehicles, and other systems whose outputs support vehicle-level functions.
The Series Progression
The first three volumes follow a deliberate progression:
- Applied Philosophy I examined engineering logic and the V-Model as a commitment structure.
- Applied Philosophy II addressed the measurement and management of complexity.
- Applied Philosophy III demonstrates how philosophical and engineering structure can become finite, executable, and verifiable system behavior.
Part I contains the complete reader-facing argument, including Chapters 1 through 18, figures, the conclusion, and compact reference material.
Part II will provide the technical appendices, traceability workbooks, pictorial references, pseudocode supplements, and the expanded Systems Engineering Library of Terms needed for engineering review and reuse.
This work is intended for technical leaders responsible for defining scope, approving architecture, and enforcing verification discipline, as well as the practicing engineers who must transform those decisions into functioning systems.
The manuscript is now available on ResearchGate:

I welcome serious review, technical criticism, and discussion as the work moves toward its next stage.
